Today is Women’s Equality Day, and Copy & Art is celebrating all of the women who have inspired us to go above & beyond.

It’s been a long journey for women’s equality and women in business. Let’s take a peek at some of the highlights from the fight for women’s rights.

Women’s rights milestones

August 26, 1920 – The U.S. Congress adopts the 19th amendment and white American women gain the right to vote

December 1, 1955 –Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat to a white man on a bus, launching the civil rights movement

August 6, 1965 – The activism of women like Fannie Lou Hamer, Ella Baker and Diane Nash result in the Voting Rights Act of 1965, giving women of color the undisputed right to vote

June 30, 1966 – Betty Friedan, author of The Feminine Mystique, helps found the National Organization for Women (NOW). The mission of NOW is “grassroots activism to promote feminist ideals, lead societal change, eliminate discrimination, and achieve and protect the equal rights of all women and girls in all aspects of social, political, and economic life.”

July 7, 1981 – Sandra Day O’Connor is sworn in by President Ronald Reagan as the first woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court

March 12, 1993 – Nominated by President Bill Clinton, Janet Reno is sworn in as the first female attorney general of the United States

March 7, 2010 – Kathryn Bigelow becomes the first woman to win an Oscar for Best Director for The Hurt Locker

July 26, 2016 – Hillary Clinton, former first lady, U.S. Senator and Secretary of State, becomes the first female presidential nominee of a major party

July 31, 2020 – Lieutenant junior grade Madeline Swegle becomes the U.S. Navy’s first black female tactical jet pilot

August 26, 2020 – 100 years after the 19th amendment, Copy & Art—a woman-run business—continues to thrive
